So earlier this year I did some work for someone for free that involved getting as much mutual fund data as possible. Because this work was done for free, it also had the implied criteria of ‘with as few hours of work’ as possible. I was able to get information for just over 10000 companies in just over 3 hours of work, and I’m gifting them to everyone on Christmas. If this draws enough interest I will publish an updated set of data.

When the weather forecast is upside down, it doesn't feel as dangerous.

I’m an optimist, but I can’t ignore the fact that it’s cold out and it’s going to get colder. So to make myself feel better about it ‘getting colder out’ I’ve flipped the weather forecast upside down and I’m rather pleased with the results. Note — this does not make -40C any less dangerous.

For those of you who haven’t experienced -40C, it’s like -30C except you die. After a few breathes of air it can freeze the lining of the bronchial tube. To make matters worse some alveolar sacs may freeze, then thaw, then bleed, then clot. These clots will travel through your body and if you are unfortunate enough to have a cold head (the blood in your head will be slightly thicker) this could lead to a real chance of a ischemic stroke caused by thrombosis. If the stroke doesn’t kill you, the cold will — welcome to Canada.

I’ve been a loyal customer to slicehost for a considerable amount of time, and I must say I have been pretty happy with the service they provide. Happiness aside, I find their prices a little high for what I need in a server. This is likely a solid indicator as to why I shouldn’t have been using them in the first place, but having complete and total control over a VPS is nice.

My experience was not without issue though, I often found that late nights coding are 1-1:30AM my connection would become impossible to use because it was so slow. I reserve all local scheduled tasks for 4-5AM (as I’m USUALLY asleep then). On slicehost it is important to run everything in a screen so you never lose your work (you will lose your flow though).

I’ve decided to migrate my blog to a friends godaddy hosting account, which I must say was easy once understanding the caveat that the database is not ‘localhost’ but instead whatever phpmyadmin states at the top (for me it was Server: phrison.db.#######.hostedresource.com).

Also, for my more involved hackery I’ve purchased a dreamhost account for just under $6 a month and it supports a full rails stack. The reason I never put my blog no dreamhost is their 8th element in their Terms Of Service which states:

Customer agrees to not engage in activities pertaining to Black Hat SEO, Spamdexing, and so-called “Scraper sites.” These can all have a severely detrimental effect on server performance and are not permitted. Pursuant to this policy, the poorly-written WordPress plugin “All in One SEO Pack” is expressly prohibited on DreamHost shared hosting servers and may only be installed on DreamHost Private Servers (VPS).

Maybe I should think twice over which Wordpress plugins I use.. ;)

With all these changes, hopefully saving $14 a month is worth it. Ironically, I just canceled tier 1 and 3 of my cable to save another $14 a month.

With that $28, I’m buying the next round of beer for a very small group of people.

The DNS-323 is a wonderful device. It is brilliant for backing up all of your data in a secure (secure against drive failure, not against l33t hax0rs) way. I felt very safe having a device like this on my network -- a place I can easily drag the most important of files.

dns-323 with taped up front lights I have had my SheevaPlug for a few weeks now and I really love it. With the $41.88 bill from FedEx aside I am very happy with this device. However, with the SheevaPlug enabling me to retrieve the awesomeness of the internet without using up cycles on my main desktop I'm running out of the measly 8 gigs of space I set it up to use earlier.
